Ambassador Cruise Line’s solar eclipse cruise will take the adult-only Ambition from Dundee to Gibraltar on a 19-night sailing departing 27 July 2027. The ship is scheduled to reach Gibraltar on 2 August, giving passengers a deck-based view of totality before continuing around the Iberian Peninsula.
What to expect on the solar eclipse cruise
Passengers are due to experience around four and a half minutes of totality from the ship while it is in Gibraltar.
Guests will gather on deck at approximately 10.45 am, when the Moon is expected to cover the Sun and reveal its outer atmosphere, known as the corona. Totality is the brief phase during which the Sun is completely obscured.
Ambassador says the event will be the longest total solar eclipse visible anywhere on Earth between 2009 and 2114. Proper eclipse eye protection remains essential during the partial phases before and after totality.
Ambition will visit six Spanish ports after totality
After leaving Gibraltar, Ambition will call at Almeria, Alicante, Valencia, Ibiza and Cadiz, followed by a final stop in Vigo on the return journey.
The ship is scheduled to arrive back in Dundee on 15 August. Starting and ending in the Scottish port makes the voyage a no-fly option for passengers who can reach Dundee overland.
Two fare categories are on sale
Ambassador has published two starting fare categories, with both prices based on one person travelling as part of a couple sharing an Inside Cabin.

The onboard programme is set to include live performances, guest speakers, music, educational sessions and social activities. The cruise line plans to release further details in the coming months.
Three ships hosted the previous eclipse programme
The 2027 itinerary follows three Ambassador Group sailings positioned for the total eclipse on 12 August 2026.
- Ambience sailed off Gijón in northern Spain.
- Ambition was near Ittoqqortoormiit, off Greenland’s east coast.
- Renaissance viewed the event in the Mediterranean.
Bob McGowan, Ambassador Cruise Line’s chief experience officer, said the three ships gave guests in very different locations a shared experience. He also identified totality as a bucket-list event for many travellers and highlighted the convenience of departing without a flight.
What travellers should consider before booking
Travellers can compare the published starting fares now, but those choosing between categories should check what each includes before committing.
Passengers who place a high value on talks and organised activities may prefer to wait for the fuller onboard programme. Eclipse visibility also depends on weather conditions, so the ports and the wider 19-night itinerary remain important parts of the booking decision.
