Terra Nova Expeditions will use the Antarctica cruise ship Terra Nova Adventurer for its 2026-27 season after St. Helena could not reach the region safely or on time. The operator blamed the continuing situation in the Middle East, which prevents St. Helena from repositioning from the Persian Gulf as planned.
Antarctica cruise ship secured for at least three seasons
The charter begins in 2026-27 and keeps Terra Nova Adventurer with the operator for a minimum of three Antarctic seasons. Terra Nova finalized the agreement after spending several months looking for a replacement vessel.
The change revises the startup’s original fleet plan. In 2025, Terra Nova announced a long-term charter of St. Helena as its entry into small-ship Antarctic cruising.
Founder and chief executive Greg Carter previously co-founded Chimu Adventures and served as chief commercial officer at Albatros Expeditions. He said the replacement vessel’s extensive polar experience made it suitable for the company’s launch.
The replacement vessel has a long polar history
Terra Nova Adventurer has operated in Antarctica, the Arctic and other remote regions for more than a decade. Many expedition travellers may recognise it by its former names, MS Expedition and G Expedition.
The ship began service in 1972 as Kattegat, a Danish ferry. It was rebuilt for expedition cruising in 2008 and later operated for G Adventures.
That background gives the vessel experience in the type of remote, weather-dependent voyages planned by Terra Nova. Expedition ships also serve as a base for guided activities away from the vessel, making their layout and operational history important parts of the passenger experience.
Refit will update lounges and wellness facilities
Terra Nova plans a series of upgrades before the vessel starts its first season with the company. The work will include:
- New soft furnishings and décor throughout the ship
- Remodelled bar and lounge areas
- A Jacuzzi on Deck 5
- A new sauna on Deck 5
The operator has not indicated that the work will delay the ship’s Antarctic debut.
Booked guests will receive direct updates if needed
Travellers with existing reservations should monitor messages from Terra Nova, which says it will contact guests directly when a booking requires further changes. The announced itineraries and expedition programme are otherwise due to proceed as planned.
Anyone considering a 2026-27 voyage should check which vessel appears in the booking information before confirming. Guests already booked on St. Helena should wait for direct guidance rather than assume their itinerary has changed, as the company says the destination, expedition experience and operating team remain central to the programme.
