BermudAir will launch South Caicos flights from Newark on Dec. 20, creating the island’s first nonstop connection with the New York area. The route gives Northeast travellers direct access to a quieter part of Turks and Caicos.
The seasonal journey is scheduled to take about three and a half hours. It will also become the island’s second nonstop route from the mainland United States.
What South Caicos flights will cost and when they run
The seasonal service will operate on Thursdays and Sundays through April 25, with introductory one-way fares starting at $347.
Round trips start at $773, although the final price will depend on travel dates and available seats. BermudAir plans to use an Embraer E190, and the route remains subject to government approval.
The airline has already placed the service on sale. Its two-day schedule supports several common holiday lengths: travellers can fly out Thursday and return Sunday for a long weekend, or stay from Sunday until Thursday. A full-week trip is also possible without changing planes in either direction.
The island gains a second direct link with the US
Newark will become South Caicos’ second nonstop gateway from the mainland United States, following American Airlines’ service from Miami.
The Miami route was the island’s first direct US connection. Before it began, visitors commonly travelled through Providenciales, the main tourism and aviation centre of Turks and Caicos, before taking a regional flight to South Caicos.
BermudAir says its two weekly Newark departures will lift scheduled international service to the island from two flights a week to four during winter. That is a significant change for an island covering a little more than eight square miles.
Regional flights remain available through interCaribbean Airways, including links with Providenciales. Those services continue to suit travellers combining more than one island, while the Newark route removes the connection for passengers beginning their journey in the New York metropolitan area.
South Caicos offers a quieter island experience
South Caicos has fewer resorts and less development than Providenciales, with tourism centred on its beaches, marine environment and fishing heritage.
The landscape includes old salt ponds, bluffs, white sand and shallow turquoise waters. Salt production and fishing shaped the island long before luxury tourism arrived, and the historic salinas remain visible today.
South Caicos is also known for bonefishing, diving and its surrounding reefs and cays. Providenciales, by comparison, offers a much wider choice of resorts, restaurants and beach clubs around areas such as Grace Bay.
The distinction gives New York-area travellers two different versions of Turks and Caicos. BermudAir is also adding Newark service to Providenciales, while the South Caicos route caters to visitors seeking the smaller and more sparsely built island.
Resort growth helped support the new route
The opening of Salterra, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, expanded South Caicos’ hotel market and helped drive the Newark service.
The 100-room Marriott-affiliated resort occupies 85 beachfront acres and sits about 10 minutes from South Caicos International Airport. It has ocean-facing rooms and suites, six food and drink venues, and a spa programme influenced by the island’s salt-making history and marine setting.
BermudAir says the route grew from an initiative led by Salterra. The resort plans to offer stays aligned with the Thursday and Sunday flight schedule.
Sailrock South Caicos provides another established high-end option, with suites and villas in a larger residential resort community. Together, the two properties give direct-flight passengers a choice of luxury accommodation rather than tying the new service to one hotel.
What travellers should check before booking
Travellers can book the route now, but they should note that operations still require government approval.
The Dec. 20 start and April 25 end date make this a seasonal option rather than a year-round connection. Introductory fares provide a starting point, but prices will vary with dates and seat availability.
For a short stay, the Thursday and Sunday pattern reduces both flying time and ground transfers. Passengers booking accommodation should match their hotel dates to those operating days and confirm the flight status before committing to other non-refundable arrangements.
